Overview

In June 2003, at the Annual Retreat of the Association of Corporate Affairs Managers of Banks (ACAMB) held at Eko Tourist Beach Resort, Akodo, Epe, Chief (Dr.) J. O. Sanusi, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), delivered a keynote address. He highlighted the critical role of banks in the economy as the payments system and financial intermediaries, influencing savings, investment, and monetary policy. Sanusi noted that public confidence in the banking sector was eroded by distress in the early 1990s but restored through sustained regulatory efforts. He emphasized the need for bankers to command respect and trust, and tasked ACAMB with defending the industry's legitimate interests through training and information sharing. The retreat's focus on 'the practice of image management' was deemed timely to enhance capacity building. Sanusi assured continued CBN support for professionals working to restore public confidence, reiterating his commitment to professionalism since becoming CBN Governor.
