Immigration Act
Overview
The Immigration Act is a comprehensive legal document consolidating and amending the law regarding immigration in Nigeria. It is structured into four parts: Administration, Deportation, Control of crews and stowaways, and Miscellaneous and supplemental. The Act applies to all persons entering or leaving Nigeria and outlines the powers of immigration officers, medical inspectors, and other authorities. Key provisions include the examination of persons landing or embarking, entry requirements and conditions, residence permits, control of visitors, deportation of prohibited immigrants, and offences related to immigration control. The Act also specifies exemptions for certain government officials and individuals with diplomatic immunity, and it grants the Minister power to make regulations and exempt persons from certain requirements. Enforcement includes powers to board ships, detain individuals, and make deportation orders. The Act emphasizes the control of immigration at recognized airports and ports, and addresses special cases such as dual nationality, young persons, and insane persons. Penalties for offences are provided, and court cases involving deportation are to be given priority.
