Nation Energy Masterplan
Overview
The National Energy Masterplan (NEMP) of Nigeria, approved on 27th April 2022, is a comprehensive policy document developed by the Energy Commission of Nigeria under the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. It outlines the nation's strategic framework for energy development, covering demand and supply projections, resource management, and cross-cutting issues. The masterplan addresses all major energy resources: petroleum (crude oil, natural gas, shale hydrocarbon), coal and tar sands/bitumen, nuclear energy, renewable energy (hydropower, solar, wind, hydrogen, other renewables), and bio-energy (biomass, fuel-wood, bio-fuel). For each resource, it specifies policies, objectives, and action plans. It also covers electricity generation and transmission, energy utilization across sectors (industry, transport, households, commercial/services, agriculture), energy efficiency and conservation, environmental and climate change considerations, and other issues like R&D, manpower development, local content, international cooperation, gender, and financing. The plan includes detailed tables with energy reserves, demand projections (e.g., total energy demand by sector, electricity demand and supply scenarios), and monitoring and evaluation parameters. Key targets include diversifying energy sources, improving access, ensuring sustainability, and reducing environmental impact.
