National Board for Technical Education ACT
Overview
The National Board for Technical Education ACT establishes the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) as a body corporate to advise the Federal Government of Nigeria on all aspects of technical education outside the university system. The Act was enacted in 1977 (No. 9) and commenced on 11th January 1977. It comprises 18 sections divided into parts covering establishment, membership, finance, and miscellaneous provisions. The Board is composed of a chairman appointed by the President and members representing various ministries (Education, Labour, Agriculture, Industry), polytechnics, technical colleges, colleges of agriculture, states, the Industrial Training Fund, employers' organizations, the National Manpower Board, professional bodies, the National Commission for Women, and individuals appointed on merit. The executive secretary is an ex-officio non-voting member. Members (except public officers) serve a three-year term and may be reappointed. The Act details the Board's functions, which include advising on technical education policy, accreditation of institutions, and maintaining standards. Financially, the Act establishes a fund for the Board, requires annual estimates, and mandates annual reports. The Minister can issue directions, and the Board has powers to obtain information.
