Overview

The National Gallery of Art Act establishes the National Gallery of Art as a body corporate in Nigeria, located in Abuja with centres nationwide. Its objects are to serve as a repository for artistic creations since Nigeria's inception and promote research, education, and appreciation in art. The Act outlines the composition of the Board of Management, including a chairman, Director-General, representatives from ministries and cultural bodies, and five other knowledgeable persons (at least one woman), all appointed by the President. Members serve four-year terms, renewable once, with removal possible for misconduct or incapacity. The Board can form committees. The Act details the gallery's functions, powers, funding, staff provisions, and reporting requirements. It also allows states to establish their own galleries and grants the Minister directive powers. The Act commenced on 25 August 1993.
