Overview

The National Policy on Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) in Nigeria, published by the Federal Ministry of Health in December 2021, outlines a comprehensive framework to improve nutrition for pregnant and lactating women, infants, and young children. It addresses the high rates of malnutrition in Nigeria, including stunting, wasting, and micronutrient deficiencies. The policy is guided by principles of equity, evidence-based interventions, and multi-sectoral collaboration. Key goals include reducing maternal and child mortality, promoting optimal breastfeeding (exclusive for six months, continued up to two years), and improving complementary feeding. Advocacy and resource mobilization are prioritized to ensure implementation.
