National Policy on Science and Technology Education
Overview
The National Policy on Science and Technology Education (S&TE) is a comprehensive document released by the Federal Ministry of Education of Nigeria in August 2018. The policy addresses the historical absence of a dedicated national framework for science and technical education since 1842, which has hindered Nigeria's technological development and contributed to a 'poverty-breeding' education system. The foreword by Honourable Minister of Education Adamu Adamu emphasizes that this policy is a landmark achievement under President Muhammadu Buhari's administration to tackle challenges in delivering quality science and technical education. The policy aims to empower citizens with skills to overcome poverty and reduce social vices caused by joblessness. The preface notes that the policy was developed through consultative meetings and workshops with stakeholders to address gaps and poor synergy in the sub-sector. It underscores the central role of S&TE in industrial development and the need to reposition Nigeria's science and technology education to meet global technological demands. The document provides a legal framework to guide interventions from sectorial ministries, departments, agencies, institutions, the private sector, and NGOs. An implementation guidelines action plan accompanies the policy. Key objectives include building a self-reliant nation, reducing reliance on foreign ingenuity, and fostering wealth creation through technical and vocational skills.
