Overview

The National Policy on the Health and Development of Adolescents and Young People in Nigeria (2007) is a revised policy document issued by the Federal Ministry of Health. It recognizes that young people (ages 10-24) constitute about one-third of Nigeria's population and face significant health risks, including HIV/AIDS, unsafe abortion, trauma, and mental health issues. The policy builds on the first National Adolescent Health Policy of 1995 and incorporates new developments, including the National Economic Empowerment Strategy (NEEDS) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It aims to provide a national platform for effective programs and interventions. The policy was developed through a consultative process involving various stakeholders and calls for continued commitment from all parties for successful implementation.
