National Rice Development Strategy II (2020-2030)
Overview
The document outlines the National Rice Development Strategy II (NRDS II) for Nigeria, spanning 2020-2030. It emphasizes rice as a critical staple for food and nutrition security, noting that local production has historically fallen short of demand due to population growth, urbanization, and changing consumer preferences. The Federal Government has prioritized domestic production to reduce costly imports, and significant public and private investments have been made, yet gaps persist. The first NRDS (2010-2018) achieved reductions in imports and productivity gains. NRDS II is a 10-year plan (2021-2030) focusing on sustainable development, addressing current and future challenges, and aiming for competitiveness in domestic and regional markets. Key priorities include sustainable increase in paddy production, land development, productivity enhancement, and input supply. The strategy was developed by the Rice Task Force Team under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, with the foreword by Minister Muhammed Sabo Nanono.
