National Strategic Plan on NCDs
Overview
This document is the National Strategic Plan of Action on Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases in Nigeria, published by the Federal Ministry of Health in September 2015. It outlines the current situation of NCDs in the country, highlighting that NCDs accounted for 27% of total deaths in 2008. The major NCDs include cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke), cancer, diabetes mellitus, sickle cell disease, chronic respiratory diseases, mental, neurological and substance use disorders, violence and road traffic injuries, and oral health disorders. Hypertension prevalence is estimated at over 20%, diabetes at 2.8% (higher in urban areas), and cancer incidence is about 100,000 cases annually. The plan emphasizes the need for prevention and control, noting the high burden and lack of adequate screening and treatment facilities.
