Overview

The National Theatre and the National Troupe of Nigeria Board Act is a Nigerian law enacted on 29 October 1991 (Act No. 47 of 1991) to establish the National Theatre and National Troupe of Nigeria Board. The Board is a body corporate with perpetual succession, authorized to sue and be sued. Its primary objectives include encouraging talent discovery and development in performing arts, achieving high artistic productions for national and international tours, aligning productions with national aspirations, promoting children's theatre, preserving the Troupe's repertoire, and managing the National Theatre as a commercial concern. The Board comprises a chairman (a well-known art patron), representatives from the Ministry of Culture and Social Welfare, the National Council for Arts and Culture, universities, the General Manager of the National Theatre, the Artistic Director of the National Troupe, and six other persons with qualifications in arts, music, and culture. Appointments are made by the President on the Minister's recommendation. The Board's functions include defining policies, establishing and developing the Troupe's repertoire (drama, dance, music), guiding local artistic experimentation, imposing fees with ministerial approval, safeguarding property, advising public institutions, liaising with grant-giving bodies, monitoring the National Theatre, and issuing guidelines. The Act also includes supplementary provisions in a schedule regarding Board proceedings.
