National Tobacco Regulations-2019
Overview
The National Tobacco Regulations, 2019, issued by the Honourable Minister for Health of Nigeria under section 39(1) of the National Tobacco Control Act, 2015, establish comprehensive rules for tobacco control in Nigeria. The regulations cover objectives, health warnings and packaging, smoke-free areas, prohibition of advertising/promotion/sponsorship, protection from tobacco industry interference, enforcement, licensing, a Tobacco Control Fund, and miscellaneous provisions. Key provisions include mandatory graphic health warnings covering specified percentages of packaging, prohibition of misleading descriptors, designation of smoke-free public places, and restrictions on tobacco industry interactions. The regulations apply nationwide and aim to protect public health, particularly from secondhand smoke exposure. They were approved by the Senate on May 23, 2019, and the House of Representatives on May 7, 2019.
