Overview

The Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), also known as the Nigeria Electrification Roadmap (2019), is a comprehensive plan to modernize and upgrade Nigeria's power transmission and distribution infrastructure. Conceived during a meeting between Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on August 31, 2018, the PPI aims to improve power delivery and spur economic growth. The initiative is implemented in three phases: Phase I focuses on 'quick-win' measures to increase operational capacity to 7 GW; Phase II expands capacity to 11 GW; Phase III targets 25 GW total grid capacity. The Federal Government of Nigeria established the FGN Power Company as a special purpose vehicle to own and execute the PPI, with Siemens leading technical implementation, supported by the German government, EPCs, financiers, and regulators. Phase I statistics include: 42 upgraded distribution substations, 10,224 km of distribution lines, 579 distribution line projects, 2,894 distribution transformers, 56 km of transmission lines, 5 transmission line projects, 13 upgraded transmission substations, 10 containerized substations, 10 mobile transformers, 8 mobile substations, supply of loose electrical equipment, 2000 MW additional power, 7.3 million new connections, 37 million people reached, 11,000 jobs created, and 5,000 trained engineers. Key stakeholders include the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Ministry of Finance, BPE, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Works, Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank AG, AFC, and other lenders. The FGN Power Company, led by Managing Director/CEO Kenny Anuwe, will ensure project coordination, stakeholder engagement, and transparency, operating as a model for public-private partnerships.
