Overview

The document is the 7th edition of the Nigeria Essential Medicines List (NEML) published in 2020 by the Federal Ministry of Health. It serves as a key tool in the healthcare delivery system, providing a list of medicines for treating prevalent medical conditions in Nigeria. The National Drug Formulary/Essential Drug List (NDF/EDL) Review Committee, established by Decree 43 of 1989 (now Act CAP 252 LFN 2004), is responsible for developing and reviewing the NEML, the National Drug Formulary, and the Nigeria Standard Treatment Guidelines (NSTG). Since the first edition in 1989, the committee has regularly updated the list, with the sixth edition published in 2016 and an addendum in 2018. The seventh edition was developed through extensive deliberations and consultations with experts and stakeholders. The Expert Therapeutic Groups evaluated new medicines for safety, efficacy, quality, and cost-effectiveness. The Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Ehanire Osagie, endorsed the document and urged healthcare providers to use it. The preface by Prof. John O. Ohaju-Obodo, Chairman of the Review Committee, highlights the committee's work and emphasizes rational use of medicines, noting that some medicines in complementary (restricted) sections should only be prescribed by specialists. The document acknowledges contributions from experts, partners, and stakeholders. It is intended for use at all levels of healthcare in Nigeria.
