Overview
This document is an Act of the Nigerian National Assembly establishing the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences, Jos. The Act is divided into seven parts covering the establishment, functions, staff, academic board, financial provisions, discoveries and inventions, and miscellaneous provisions. The Institute is a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal. Its functions include providing courses of instruction, training, and research in geosciences and mining, producing technicians and skilled personnel for mining and related industries, offering laboratory services for rock and mineral identification, sampling, mineral beneficiation, and metallurgical analysis, and sponsoring educational programs. The Act also establishes a Governing Board, sets out the tenure and remuneration of members, and provides for the appointment of management staff including a Director-General, Directors, and a Legal Adviser. An Academic Board is established to regulate academic matters. Financial provisions include the creation of a fund for the Institute, borrowing powers, annual estimates, accounts, and audit. The Act also addresses discoveries, inventions, and innovations by the Institute and miscellaneous provisions such as suits against the Institute and savings. The Act came into effect on 6th November 2018.
